Hughie Rich ‘Carp’ Carpenter, 92, of Perkins Pavilion, died Saturday, October 5, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Wednesday, October 9, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First United Methodist Church, Doniphan, Nebraska with Rev. James Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery, Doniphan, Nebraska.

Hughie Rich ‘Carp’ Carpenter was born December 7, 1909 in Bigelow, Kansas to George Gaylord & Zella Ivan (Fairchild) Carpenter. He attended schools in Bigelow and Frankfort, Kansas. On December 28, 1929, he married Verla E. Walls in Englewood, Colorado and she preceded him in death in 1991. He worked in logging camps in Washington state; farmed in Kansas and Nebraska and retired from Montgomery Ward & Company of Hastings, Nebraska. He received many awards for his charitable works: Volunteer award from The Nebraska Department of Social Services, The Sunshine Award from KOLN-KGIN TV, appointed an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska by past governor, Charles Thone, Outstanding Nebraska Volunteer of the Year by the AkSarBen and the Omaha World Herald. He delivered Meals on Wheels in Doniphan 18+ years. He served on the Board of the Midland Area Agency on Aging and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Doniphan, Nebraska.

Hughie Rich ‘Carp’ Carpenter was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Verla and1 daughter, Joyce Boroff.
