Our
father rejoined our mother in heaven on January 30, 2008Hastings resident, Alvin Lester Sassman, 84, of 825 Webster, died Wednesday at his home. Services will be Wednesday, February 6, 2008; 10:00 A.M. at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Joel Remmers officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Monday, February 4, 2008; 9 A.M. – 9 P.M., Tuesday, February 5, 2008; 9 A.M. -9 P.M. at the funeral home and Wednesday, February 6, 2008; 1 hr. prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Mr. Sassman was born June 19, 1923 in Marathon, Iowa to John H. & Kate L. (Partridge) Sassman. Shortly after high school, he was drafted into the United States Army from February 19, 1943 until November 19, 1945. He served in France & England during WWII with the 196th General Hospital Unit. He received the Victory Medal, 2 bronze stars, the American Theater of Operations (ATO) medal and the European Theater of Operations Medal (EAMETO). He was recognized by the French Government for D-Day in Normandy & the Liberation of France. After his discharge, he served in the Army Reserves for a number of years. He attended Norfolk Business College in Norfolk, Nebraska and received a Jr. Accountant degree. In Norfolk, he met and married Ruth Mary Ann Jensen on August 31, 1947 and she preceded him in death on October 23, 2005. Three children were born to this union. He was employed as a manager/bookkeeper by Wilson Concrete Company. In 1951, they moved to Hastings, where he worked for Lippincot Oil & Construction Company for 4 years, Consolidated Concrete Company for 25 years, Juniata Feed Yards for 3 years, the YMCA for 4 years and Monty Malouf Jr, Cleaning Products for 3 years. The family joined First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in 1951. He was an active member of the counting group on Sunday mornings. When he retired, he became a shepherd of a Shepherding Group and was a Stephen’s Minister at the church. He was also an active member of the volunteer group at the Grand Island Veterans Home and V.A. Medical Center for 12 years. He was an active member of the Military Burial Detail, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 1346 and D.A.V. Chapter 9. He was a continuous member of the American Legion Post 11 and a lifetime member of the North American Fishing Club. .Mr. Sassman was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Ruth; two sisters and five brothers.
