Services will be Tuesday, July 22, 2008; 10:30 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Tom Murray officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 20, 2008; 1:00 P.M. 9:00 P.M., Monday, July 21, 2008; 9:00 A.M 9:00 P.M. with family present from 6:00 P.M. -8:00 P.M., and Tuesday, July 22, 2008; 9:00 A.M. until service time. Memorials may be given to Sutton American Legion Scholarship Fund, 101 W. Elm, Sutton, Nebraska 68979. Mr. Wanek was born September 23, 1939 in Beatrice, Nebraska to Ludvik R. & Helen I. (Curtain) Wanek. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1957. He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1959-1963 rated as an Aviation Electronics Technician Third Class and a Search and Rescue Air Crewman. On January 21, 1967, he married Sally Irene Thorson Pederson and she preceded him in death on July 4, 1996. Mr. Wanek worked as a radio announcer at WCNC Radio, Elizabeth City, North Carolina (1961), KWBE Radio, Beatrice, Nebraska (1963-1965), KMA Radio, Shenandoah, Iowa (1966) and KHAS Radio, Hastings, Nebraska (1965-1967). From 1967 until his retirement in 2005, he was employed as a salesman and Vice President at Cash-Wa Candy Company in Hastings. He was a member of Juniata Community Church, having served on the Diaconate Board, American Legion Argonne Post #61 in Sutton, Nebraska, having served as Post Commander in 2002, 2003 and 2005, Past District 10 Area Commander, 2006-2007 and Hastings Chorus of The Plains. He also served as Vice President of the Executive Board of the Roger Williams Society of Christian College Students at the University of Nebraska Kearney campus.
