Donald Mefford

Donald L. Mefford, 77, of Hastings died on Saturday, January 06, 2007 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. Services will be Wednesday, January 10, 2007; 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. William Nottage-Tacey officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Visitation will be Monday 5pm-9pm, Tuesday, 9am-9pm with family present 6pm-8pm, Wednesday 9am-11am at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials to the family a memorial will be established at a later date.

Mr. Mefford was born March 1, 1929 in Hastings to Carl A. & Ethel D. (Swingle) Mefford. He grew up on a farm south of Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School in 1946. He played American Legion Baseball from 1945-1946. He enlisted in the Army at age 17 on September 12, 1946. He was a light machine gun squad leader. While in the army he became a marksman with the rank of Sgt. and received the Medal for the occupation of Japan; and the WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 27, 1947. In 1948, he entered the Postal Service as a substitute clerk in the Railway Mail Service in Omaha. He worked in the Council Bluffs, Iowa terminal also as a substitute clerk. He transferred to Denver as a clerk and rode the mail car out of Denver to Omaha terminal sorting mail as he rode from 1951-1953. He moved to Hastings Post Office as a clerk and retired on December 31, 1984 as a supervisor. After retirement, he bought and sold guns and fishing equipment. He married Joyce Fraser on March 5, 1952. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, V.F.W. and the NRA. His hobbies included home improvements, hunting, fishing, traveling and loved spending time with his family.
