Hastings resident, Ethel M. Worlein, 93, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009 at her residence.
Services will be Saturday, December 19, 2009; 10:30 A.M. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings with Rev. Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Thursday, December 17, 2009; 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., Friday, December 18, 2009; 8:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and 1 hour prior to service at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the family.
Ethel was born March 19, 1916 in Boone County, Nebraska to Eno & Minda (Hestekind) Saathoff. Ethel attended school in Loretto, Nebraska. She was a hard worker, sometimes working as hard as the men did. She left home and went to Council Bluffs, Iowa to work as a domestic for DR. Stec, She moved to Kansas to be with her sister Thelma and worked on a farm. In 1939, she married Mahlon J. Ubben and they lived in the Odell, Nebraska area for a number of years. They moved to Beatrice where Ethel worked for the Steel Tanks Defense Plant as a welder and earned two Navy E pins. Ethel and Mahlon later divorced. She then went to work as a waitress in Beatrice for a number of years. Ethel married Walter Worlein on September 2, 1950. They lived in various towns throughout Nebraska, during which time she was a stay at home mother. After they moved to Hastings, she went to work at Westland Modular Homes as a carpenter for 15 years, until they closed. She then worked at USA INNS of Hastings doing maid work for 5 years. She retired and tried to stay at home, but Ethel liked to work so she was a school crossing guard at 9th and Burlington for several years. When Ethel was 78 years old her health declined and she had to quit working. She was a resident of Hastings for 48 years. Her favorite pastime as a child was to break and ride horses.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Worlein; Step-Mother, Tina Flessner Saathoff; 4 brothers; 5 sisters; and 1 granddaughter.
