Helen was born on October 14, 1928, at home in Franklin, Nebraska, to Willie Versaw and Lois Gertrude Martin Versaw. From an early age, her life reflected diligence and purpose. She attended County School District 68 and graduated from Franklin High School in 1945 at the age of 16. With a heart to care for others, she pursued nursing, first studying at Nebraska Wesleyan University and then completing her degree at Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, Nebraska, graduating in 1950.
On February 24, 1951, Helen married Gene C. Arnold. As a devoted military wife, she supported Gene during his service in the Korean War while they lived in California. They later settled in Trumbull, Nebraska, where together they built a home centered on faith, raising their seven children to know and love the Lord.
Helen’s life was a living testimony of Christ’s love. She served faithfully as a nurse at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and later in the offices of Drs. Klegger and Glenn, caring not only for physical needs but offering compassion and encouragement to all she encountered.
Her deepest calling, however, was her walk with the Lord. Helen was devoted to the study of God’s Word and spent countless hours in prayer and writing personal devotions to encourage others. She led women’s Bible studies, taught Sunday School, and served her church with humility and joy, always ready to share the hope she had in Christ. Whether at home, in her church, or on mission trips with her husband, Helen lived out the Gospel through both her words and her actions.
She found great joy in serving others in her community as well—leading 4-H, working as a camp nurse, and supporting her children in every activity. Even in retirement, her servant’s heart remained strong. She volunteered at CPC and learned Spanish at Community Technical School so she could minister more effectively to women in her area, teaching classes in infant care, budgeting, and essential life skills. Her desire was always to meet both practical and spiritual needs.
Helen and Gene also shared a love of travel, exploring much of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and making a meaningful trip to Korea to see where Gene had served. Wherever she went, Helen carried her quiet faith, gentle spirit, and words of encouragement.
She will be remembered for her grace, wisdom, and steadfast faith. Her life reflected the love of Christ in a way that touched generations, and her legacy lives on in the many lives she nurtured, taught, and prayed for.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gene; her parents; and her four siblings.
She is lovingly survived by her children & their spouses: Jo Stolle of Grand Island, NE; Jeff and Susie Arnold of Pocahontas, IA; Craig and Kim Arnold of Trumbull, NE; Jan and Randy Dye of Grand Island, NE; Randy and Jill Arnold of Cozad, NE; Brian and Lauri Arnold of Trumbull, NE; and Melody and Tim Guerino of Falling Waters, WV; along with 29 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23
Helen’s life was a testament to faith in action, and while she will be deeply missed, her family rejoices in the promise that she is now at home with the Lord she loved so dearly
