Ilene graduated early from Aurora High School in December 1951. The family lived in Stockham at the time, with Weert and Julia running a local store. She had many happy memories of that time with impromptu musical jam sessions where she played piano, her dad played violin, and other family, friends, and customers joined in on instruments of their choice. Shortly after that, they moved to Hastings, where she lived until October 2025, when she needed more care and moved to Good Samaritan Nursing Home—Grand Island, NE.
She married Ben Weber in May 1954, whom she met while working at the Navy Ammunition Depot east of Hastings. Together, they built a life and raised a family of five kids after losing their second son in infancy. She worked at the Hastings Regional Center for 40 years, working her way from switchboard operator to secretary, predominantly in the Psychology area. She retired in 1996, and shortly thereafter discovered she had breast cancer. She kept a positive attitude during treatment and was proud to be a survivor. She was an avid reader of books (and taught her daughters to be the same). She read both the Hastings Tribune and the Omaha World Herald daily, front to back, until her failing eyesight made that impossible. She and Ben were lifelong members of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hastings. They both had a love of gardening and spending time with extended family and friends—camping, canoeing, and attending dances. They looked forward to when their “crew” was scheduled to cook hamburgers Wednesday evenings at the Hastings VFW. She also made annual trips to Colorado with her daughters (Suzi, Cheri and Lori), a granddaughter (Jessie) and sister-in-law (Johna), when her brother, Len, and his wife, Dot, could no longer make the trip to Nebraska. She looked forward to their “Colorado Girls’ Trip” every year, staying in “our room” at the Embassy Suites-Loveland and enjoying seeing the families, especially her beloved brother. Their "Toes in the Thompson" side trip always brought laughter and lively discussion about the best way down to the river. Even when she watched from the bank, the girls splashed water her way so she was never left out.
Ilene is survived by her son Mike (Raylene) Weber of Plattsmouth, NE, daughter Cheryl Welsh of Lincoln, NE, son Paul (Beverly) Weber of Glenvil, NE, and son-in-law Butch Jarvis of Coloma, MI. Her never-spoiled, just “well-loved” grandchildren include Chris Weber, Melissa (Rob) Turner, Jennifer (Steve) Jaixen, Jessica (Mike) Rohan, Jamie Thomas, Jackie Bryce (Mark Wittenbach),
Cole (Michael Singleton) Weber, Cody Weber, Wyatt Weber, Abby (Drew) Gillaspie, Cari Jarvis (Chris Westley), Ally Jarvis (Abe Zawislak) and Erik Jarvis. She had 21 never-spoiled, also “well-loved” great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also survived by one sister-in-law, Johna Hinrichs, and many, many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 60 years, Ben, infant son Randall Weber, daughter Suzanne Weber, daughter Lori Jarvis, and son-in-law Jeff Welsh. Also predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law: LaVern and Margaret Hinrichs, Leonard and Dorothy Hinrichs, Wayne Hinrichs, Kenneth and Karen Hinrichs, Melvin and Myrtle Hinrichs, and Darrell Hinrichs.
