Edgar resident Janet A. Hajny, 94, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Sutton Community Home, Sutton, NE.
Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2026 with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton with Father Lee Jirovsky officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 28 at St. Martin’s (Loucky) Catholic Cemetery in Deweese. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27; 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or St. Jude’s. Janet was born on November 23, 1931, on a 120-acre farm 4 miles west of Deweese, Nebraska, to Edward and Margaret (Vap) Hajny. She was baptized and confirmed in Christ. Her family later moved to a farm 6 miles north of Edgar, where she lived until her admission to Sutton Community Home. She graduated from Clay Center High School in 1949. Following graduation, she became employed at Clay County Courthouse in the Clerk’s office, then Clay County Deputy, and after was the Clay County Clerk for 30 years before retiring. After retiring, Janet was the court bailiff for Clay County Court. She conducted elections which included preparing and processing ballots.
Janet was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Janet taught CCD and was a member of the South Nebraska Register and the altar society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1987 and Adams County 8 & 40. Janet was a member of the Clay County Historical Society, AARP, and former member of The Czech Society. She volunteered at Old Trusty Days and was a volunteer for the American Heart Association. Janet assisted with exhibits at the Clay County Fair. Most of her life was spent taking care of her cats. They were very special to her. Her favorite black cat would follow her to the mailbox back and forth. She enjoyed being outside in the garden and pulling weeds. She enjoyed coffee breaks with brothers and friends. She made time to socialize with her brothers coming to the farm. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling with Vivian McCauley, her best friend. She enjoyed Nebraska Football games. Janet prepared very good desserts. Her specialty was pecan pie, which was brought to many family gatherings. She enjoyed sewing dress garments and would always remember family birthdays. Each card she sent had a letter attached. She enjoyed shopping with her sister and making an evening with dining at a restaurant.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Lilburn, Alvin, Lanuel, Bob, and David.
