Kay R. Sommerfeld

Hastings resident Kay R. Sommerfeld, 65, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.

Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 24, at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hastings with Pastor Joel Remmers Officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Bridge – Hastings. The service will be live-streamed on Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home’s website. Kay was born December 19, 1960, in Hastings, NE, and was adopted by Paul and Leone (Lewis) Sommerfeld. She graduated from Hastings High School and graduated from Central Community College with a degree in Human Resources.

Kay worked at the Bridge for many years and was a shared living provider, where she was known for her caring nature and dedication to serving others. She was a faithful member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. In her free time, Kay found joy in tending to her houseplants, cooking weekly meals for her family, and spending time swimming.

Above all, Kay treasured her family and friends, especially her six grandchildren. She delighted in attending their activities, celebrating their accomplishments, and creating lasting memories together. One of Kay’s proudest achievements was her sobriety. She celebrated 11 years of recovery, a milestone she held close to her heart. Her compassion and strength inspired her to minister to and encourage others as they navigated their own journeys toward sobriety, leaving a lasting impact on many lives, and the kingdom of God.

Kay was preceded in death by her father, Paul Sommerfeld.
