Lorene Blum

Hastings resident Lorene Christine Blum, 98, passed away Monday, November 11, 2019, at Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, NE.

Graveside Service is 1 p.m. Thursday, November 14, at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Memorial Service is 2 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hastings with Pastor Jessica Palys officiating. Visitation is 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Lorene was born August 29, 1921, in Hastings, NE to Henry & Margaret (Stertz) Blum. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1939 and attended the Nebraska College of Commerce. Lorene was baptized and confirmed in the German Emmanual Congregational Church.

Lorene was employed at The Provident Company for 24 years and R. Howard Smith Insurance Agency for 20 years. She taught Sunday School in the German Emmanuel Congregational Church. Lorene was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hastings, where she was a youth leader for 10 years, served on the Board of Trustees, and held various offices in the Women’s Fellowship. Some of her memberships include: charter member of the Mid-Nebraska Chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia and served as Secretary, charter member of the Credit Women’s Breakfast Club and served as local as well as State President, member of Soroptimist International of Hastings and served as Treasurer and President, former member and Collation Chairman of Vital Signs Fair Committee, served as Secretary for the Independent Insurance Agents of Hastings, and former member and Secretary for the Board of Habitat for Humanities in Hastings.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Lawrence, Henry W., C. Walter, John, and Raymond L. Blum; and sister, Marie Saladen.
