Marvin was born May 15, 1918 to Albert & Clara (Bachman) Schulz. He grew up on a farm south of Ayr. He graduated from Blue Hill School in 1936. Since jobs were scarce, Marvin found work in Chicago, Denver, and California before entering the Army in 1941. He spent his service during World War II assigned to the 20th Army Coast Artillery in Freeport, Texas. Marvin married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Buschow, on December 10, 1942. They lived in Galveston, Texas until his discharge in 1945. They then moved to Hastings where they spent the rest of their lives together. Marvin worked 20 years for the Dutton-Lainson Company progressing from janitor to factory manager and Vice President. Next, he was tasked to start up and then supervise the factory for Leverage Tool Company in Glenvil, Nebraska. He finished his manufacturing work career serving as purchasing agent for Hastings Industries, retiring in 1983. Marvin was a totally dedicated and loyal man. This was reflected in his work and relationship with his family and church. He was an active member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He served for many years on the Church Council, Foundation and Finance Committees, and as an usher. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, sports, reading, and spending time with his family. Mildred always considered Marvin her gentle giant in all walks of life.
