Matt was born on October 17, 1980, in Nebraska City, NE, to Douglas and Jane (Heng) Mick. He grew up with a strong work ethic, a generous heart, and a love of all things mechanical.
Matt graduated from St. Cecilia Catholic School in 1999 and went on to earn his associate’s degree in Autobody Technology from Central Community College in Hastings. His talent, dedication, and pride in his craft were clear to everyone who knew him. He later owned and operated Matt’s Body Shop, where he built not only a successful
business but lasting friendships with customers and colleagues alike.
Those who knew him best would describe him as a thrill-seeker, outdoorsman, and a man with a “great quiet sarcastic sense of humor.” Matt had the most clever comedic timing. He would sit quietly and listen while others talked, and then at the perfect moment, he’d drop a zinger that surprised us all and made us break out in laughter. A classic Matt moment might be noted by the crazy facial expressions he showed when telling a naughty story, or when he spoke of the wild things he and his brother Paulie did growing up. As fate would have it, at a Halloween party in 2002, Matt met the love of his life: Melissa Ann Schneider from Gibbon, Nebraska, who was attending Hastings College. They got engaged in 2005, and were married December 1, 2007. Their marriage was filled with laughter, partnership, and a deep, steady devotion to one another. On December 19, 2010, they welcomed their first child, a son who they named Christopher, and a few years later, they welcomed a daughter, Katherine, born on May 5, 2014. Matt had a huge heart filled with affection for his family and friends. Spending time with Melissa, Christopher, and Katherine, going out on the boat, fishing and hunting with life-long friends, riding motorcycles, and lighting off fireworks were among his favorite things to do. He also loved loading the family into the car and getting together with Paulie on Sunday evenings to have dinner at their dad’s. You see, his family was his life. He was such an amazing and caring husband to Melissa, and a wonderful, involved father for Christopher and Katherine.
Matt was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Chapparral’s Motorcycle Club, and the Central Community College Autobody Advisory Committee. Whether riding with friends mentoring young technicians, or lending a hand to anyone in need, Matt lived fully and gave freely.
He will be remembered for his warm smile, his steady presence, his unmatched skill in the shop, and his unwavering loyalty to those he loved.
Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents; aunts; and uncles.
