Hastings resident Melissa Joy Chaon, 56, passed away to her heavenly home on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 11, 2026, at Berean Bible Church in Hastings, Nebraska, with Pastor Tevin Eddy officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings, NE. Visitation will be Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the family to be established at a later date. Melissa was born on December 31, 1969, in Sidney, Nebraska, to Donald and Carolyn (Kesselring) Chaon. She grew up in Bayard, Nebraska, and graduated from Bayard High School in 1988.
After graduating high school, Melissa relocated to Sidney, Nebraska, where she worked at Cabela’s for several years. Melissa later moved to Hastings, Nebraska, to attend Central Community College. In 1995, she earned her Associate Degree in Medical Assisting. Melissa dedicated 26 years of her career to Mary Lanning Healthcare Medical Records Department. She also worked for several years in housekeeping. Melissa was a dependable and hardworking employee who took pride in the work she did and the people she served.
Melissa enjoyed baking, thrifting, planting flowers and listening to music. She also enjoyed watching Husker football games. You could often find Melissa at craft fairs, spending time at the lake or shopping at Goodwill. Melissa had a special love for animals and treasured her pets, especially her beloved boxers, Harley and King.
Family and friends were very important to Melissa. She cherished the time she got to spend with all of them, especially her son, Preston, and her grandson, Mason, who were the light of her life. Melissa was a member of the Berean Bible Church in Hastings, where she was baptized on March 11, 2001. She will be remembered for her caring and generous heart, her compassion for others and her willingness to share the love of Jesus Christ.
Though we grieve, we hold tightly to the promise of a joyful reunion.
Melissa was preceded in death by her father, Donald Chaon, and her nephew, Nicholas Herringer.
