Hastings resident Richard A.”Dick” Smart, 89, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, NE.
Rosary will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings, NE and Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10.30 a.m. with Father Jeremy Hazuka officiating. Military honors will be provided by Hastings Military Honor Guard. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atchison, KS, Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to St. Michael’s Catholic Church Endowment Fund or Special Children’s Fund. Dick was born November 28, 1936, in Atchison, KS to Fred and Freda (Ulrich) Smart. .He graduated from Maur High School in Atchison, Kansas. He served in the Army from 1955 – 1958.
Dick was a supervisor for Christenson Janitorial Service before retiring from custodial work. He also worked for Dutton-Lainson Company. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Eagles Aerie #592, Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degrees, and a lifetime member of the American Council of the Blind. During his retirement, Dick took pride in visiting residents at nursing homes.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred Smart Jr. & Karen Cunningham, John & Deola Smart; sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Jim Roths; and granddaughter, Lenay Kubes.
