Roger Glen Fowler

Former Glenvil, Nebraska resident Roger Glen Fowler, 83, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Mary Lanning Health Care in Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be at 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 21, 2026, at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings, Nebraska, with Pastor Paul Dunbar officiating. Burial will be at Glenvil Cemetery in Glenvil, NE. Visitation will be Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 1:00 P.M.to 6:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Funeral Home, with the family present from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Hospice – Hastings or Faith Lutheran Church. The service will be live-streamed on Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home’s website. Roger was born Aug. 20, 1943, in Clay Center, NE, to Merle and Vera (Warboys) Fowler. Merle died June 28, 1998, at age 79, and Vera died Jan. 9, 2009, at age 89. Roger was their only child.

He had a half-brother, Dale Bickel, who died May 21, 2011, at age 79. Dale was Vera's child from her first marriage to Lloyd Bickel, who was killed at age 22 from electrocution while drilling a well near Deweese that also killed Glen Fowler, the brother of Merle.

Roger graduated from Glenvil High School in 1961, where he played basketball and competed in track and field. He would often talk about the guys he remembered competing against from Fairfield, Edgar, Clay Center, Trumbull, as well as players from other small schools.

Roger married Lois (Kuehn) on Dec. 2, 1961, at the former Zion Lutheran Church on South Denver Avenue in Hastings, where he was later baptized June 2, 1963.

The couple first lived in one of the housing units at Prospect Park in Hastings. They later lived on South Boston Avenue and South Rhode Island before moving to their hometown of Glenvil in July 1972.

They had three children: Rhonda, Darran, and Kelly.

They lived in the same house in Glenvil for 50 years until moving to an apartment in Hastings near Lincoln Park in July 2022.

Roger's first job out of high school was in road construction. He later worked for Weyerhouse Packing Co. in Hastings before going to work for the Hastings Daily Tribune in May 1964, where he printed the newspaper for 41 years, retiring in December 2005.

On most days after work, Roger sat in the same bar stool to have a beer at the American Legion in Glenvil, where he also liked to play pool and snooker.

Roger and Lois were known to crash wedding receptions at the Legion on weekends, sitting as a group with other couples from Glenvil. Somehow they were always able to sit at the same tables as if they were reserved for them. Roger loved to dance at those receptions.

Roger enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, especially those in the Tribune, camping — especially at Lovewell, Mormon Island, and Crystal Lake — golfing, gardening, driving the gravel roads around Glenvil, playing pitch and horseshoes, and taking weekly trips to Hastings to buy a Powerball ticket and washing his pickup. He loved listening to 50's music, especially Buddy Holly.

He made attending each of his grandchildren's sporting events and dance recitals a high priority during his retirement.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Survivors include wife, Lois; daughters, Rhonda Svoboda and Kelly (Bryce) Brodrick; and son, Darran (Toni) Fowler all of Hastings; five grandchildren, Jami Stortenbecker (Skyler) of Cozad, Jake Fowler (Bobbie) of Omaha, Jacki Fowler (D'Mauria Martin) of Wayne, Peyton Brodrick (Alexis) of Lincoln, Lexi Ackles (Caleb) of Hastings; and 5 great-grandchildren, Brooks and Braxton Stortenbecker, Ace Merle and Louella Fowler, and Ar'Leigha Martin.
