Steven R. Schmidt

Hastings resident Steven R. Schmidt, 71, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2024, at his home.    

Services with military rites by the Hastings Military Honor Guard will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings with Rev. Brian McClurg officiating. There will be no burial at this time. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be given to the Hastings Military Honor Guard. 

Steven married Paula White on August 14, 1976. He was a teacher for the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility. Steven loved to fish. He enjoyed watching baseball and driving his Harley Davidson Motorcycle which he named The Captain. He loved his country dearly and fought for it during the Vietnam War as a Marine. Steven spent many years involved in military organizations such as the Young Marines, where he helped school-aged children learn the discipline and courage of U.S. Marines.

Steven was a man with hard hands but a soft heart. A man of few words, but his actions always spoke for themselves. He was a great son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Steven was preceded in death by his parents John and Shirley Schmidt.  

Steven is survived by his wife Paula, his three children and their families; Kimberly (Brian), Abby (Jason), and Steven (Taren) as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Joseph (Cheyenne), Savannah (Logan), Alison, Tyler, Katie, Zander, Amy, Ryker, and Kingston. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses; Vickie, David, Larry & Suzie, along with many other nieces and nephews.
