Thomas "Tom" Deveny

Ayr resident Thomas D. “Tom” Deveny, 85, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, NE.

Rosary is 10 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings with Father Jeremy Hazuka and Father Thomas Brouillette officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Memorials may be given to St. Michael’s Heating & Air Fund. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday with family present, 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Tom was born August 29, 1933, in Hastings, NE to Thomas P. & Anna I. (Hoarty) Deveny. He attended county school and graduated from Juniata High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy. Tom married Norma Hervert on December 29, 1962, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Hastings. He farmed in the area for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed farming and caring for his cattle. Tom was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Pius XII Council 1123 Knights of Columbus for over 50 years.

Education was very important to him, and he was very proud when his four daughters earned their college degrees. Tom loved to dance; he and Norma enjoyed dancing with the La Danza Dance Club in Hastings.

Tom enjoyed attending auctions and his family has been blessed with many “treasures” purchased at a bargain price. Three days a week Tom exercised at the Hastings YMCA during the past 12 years and everyone there knew him by name and he liked that.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy Marley and Mary Ilene McBride; infant brother, Joseph; and brother, Francis Deveny.
