Weir L. John, age 95, passed away peacefully with family by his side at his Augusta, Georgia assisted living residence, Thrive of Augusta, the afternoon of Saturday, July 13, 2024.
A Celebration of Life will be at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home located at 1225 North Elm Ave, Hastings, NE on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Pastor Joel Remmers of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will conduct the services. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial with military rites by Hastings Military Honor Guard to be at Parkview Cemetery following the funeral. To honor Weir, memorials are suggested to First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 501 N. Burlington Ave, Hastings, Nebraska 68901. A gathering of family and friends will be held following the burial at Pine Patch Tree Farm located at 780 East 26th Street, Hastings, Nebraska. Weir was born April 8, 1929, in Comstock, NE, the youngest son of William E. and Clara (Zabloudjil) John. He graduated from Hastings, NE High School with the class of 1947. He proudly volunteered for service in the United States Army shortly after graduation and was honorably discharged with rank of sergeant following the Korea conflict in December 1952.
Weir was united in marriage to Mary Ann Kottwitz on May 25, 1949, in Hastings, NE. Weir and Mary Ann had 69 years of joy filled marriage. To this union were born Susan Kay and Steven Mark.
The business career of Weir began in the retail sales of footwear. He was co-owner of Hoff and John Bootery in Hastings. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become a residential and commercial property realtor and broker in the mid-1970s. He was owner for many years of Nebraska Land Realty of Hastings. He and Mary Ann owned numerous residential and commercial properties in Hastings. He considered each of his many renters as part of his extended family.
Weir was active in Hastings community activities…Kiwanis Club, Girl Scouts treasurer, American Legion, Elks Club, and member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He greatly enjoyed traveling with Mary Ann on vacations to California and Georgia to be with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Weir was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann; parents, Clara and Ernest John; and older brothers, Hubert and Raymond John.
He is survived by daughter, Susan K. Gaffney (Phil) of Evans, GA; and son, Steven M. John (Cynthia) of Ukiah, CA; grandchildren, Elizabeth John, Philip J Gaffney, and Matthew Gaffney; and great-grandchildren, Braxton and Castella.
